Happy Halloween

This was the most fun...watching my sister and brother-in-law outfit their Grandson in his Spiderman costume. Mom and I had gone out to her flea market to meet them, and they had purchased this adorable costume on the way. We could not wait to try it on and it was the cutiest thing ever! He was so excited about being Spiderman and having muscles!

How do you put TP on the roll?

My oldest daughter posted this question on her Facebook...
How do you put the toilet paper on the roll?
Of course, this triggered one of my pet peeves...put it on the RIGHT way!
The toilet paper should come OVER the top of the roll.

If I sit down and find the toilet paper on backward coming out from behing the roll I have to change it before I use it. Do you think this is one of those OCD things from yesterday's post? OK, I have taken a couple of photos to show the design on the toilet paper to illustrate why it is suppose to come over the roll. See the hearts and roses? In order for the design to be right side up the toilet paper must come over the top of the roll.
Hearts and roses or what ever the design it needs to be right:)
Think about it even when you go to a motel, and they make that little fold on the cheap toilet paper it is over the top of the roll.

OCD Symptoms in Our Family

Our family seems to have an overabundance of OCD symptoms. Now, we are not to the extreme and only have several of the symptoms. My husband, for example, keeps his egg cartons in a very "orderly" fashion. He takes the eggs out the same way every time, every thing has to be even. All of us "count things," no matter where we are it just happens in our minds without us really being aware that we are doing it. I knew I did stuff like that all my life, but then my sister-in-law started talking about things she did. I have used the information about OCD from the Mayo Clinic for you to check your symptoms.

My question is do you have OCD type things you do?

Symptoms

By Mayo Clinic staff
Obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms include both obsessions and compulsions.
Obsession symptomsOCD obsessions are repeated, persistent and unwanted ideas, thoughts, images or impulses that you have involuntarily and that seem to make no sense. These obsessions typically intrude when you're trying to think of or do other things.
Obsessions often have themes to them, such as:
  • Fear of contamination or dirt
  • Having things orderly and symmetrical
  • Aggressive or horrific impulses
  • Sexual images or thoughts
Obsession symptoms and signs may include:
  • Fear of being contaminated by shaking hands or by touching objects others have touched
  • Doubts that you've locked the door or turned off the stove
  • Thoughts that you've hurt someone in a traffic accident
  • Intense stress when objects aren't orderly or facing the right way
  • Images of hurting your child
  • Impulses to shout obscenities in inappropriate situations
  • Avoidance of situations that can trigger obsessions, such as shaking hands
  • Replaying pornographic images in your mind
  • Dermatitis because of frequent hand washing
  • Skin lesions because of picking at your skin
  • Hair loss or bald spots because of hair pulling
Compulsion symptomsOCD compulsions are repetitive behaviors that you feel driven to perform. These repetitive behaviors are meant to prevent or reduce anxiety related to your obsessions. For instance, if you believe you hit someone with your car, you may return to the apparent scene over and over because you just can't shake your doubts. You may also make up rules or rituals to follow that help control the anxiety you feel when having obsessive thoughts.
As with obsessions, compulsions typically have themes, such as:
  • Washing and cleaning
  • Counting
  • Checking
  • Demanding reassurances
  • Performing the same action repeatedly
  • Orderliness
Compulsion symptoms and signs may include:
  • Hand washing until your skin becomes raw
  • Checking doors repeatedly to make sure they're locked
  • Checking the stove repeatedly to make sure it's off
  • Counting in certain patterns
  • Arranging your canned goods to face the same way
Symptoms usually begin gradually and tend to vary in severity throughout your life. Symptoms generally worsen during times when you're experiencing more stress. OCD is considered a lifelong illness.

Lilly Ledbetter Story

The following is a transcript of a speech by Lilly Ledbetter, 73 year old namesake of the
Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Good evening, I'm Lilly Ledbetter and I'm here tonight to say: What a difference four years make!
Some of you may know my story: How for nineteen years, I worked as a manager for a tire plant in Alabama. And some of you may have lived a similar story: After nearly two decades of hard, proud work, I found out that I was making significantly less money than the men who were doing the same work as me. I went home, talked to my husband, and we decided to fight.

We decided to fight for our family and to fight for your family too. We sought justice because equal pay for equal work is an American value. That fight took me ten years. It took me all the way to the Supreme Court. And, in a 5–4 decision, they stood on the side of those who shortchanged my pay, my overtime, and my retirement just because I am a woman.

The Supreme Court told me that I should have filed a complaint within six months of the company's first decision to pay me less even though I didn't know about it for nearly two decades. And if we hadn't elected President Barack Obama, the Supreme Court's wrongheaded interpretation would have been the law of the land.

And that would have been the end of the story. But with President Obama on our side, even though I lost before the Supreme Court, we won. The first bill that President Obama signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. I think it says something about his priorities that the first bill he put his name on has my name on it too.

As he said that day with me by his side, "Making our economy work means making sure it works for everyone."
The president signed the bill for his grandmother, whose dreams hit the glass ceiling, And for his daughters, so that theirs never will. Because of his leadership, women who faced pay discrimination like I did will now get their day in court.

That was the first step but it can't be the last. Because women still earn just 77 cents for every dollar men make. Those pennies add up to real money. It's real money for the little things like being able to take your kids to the movies and for the big things like sending them to college. It's paying your rent this month and paying the mortgage in the future. It's having savings for the bill you didn't expect and savings for the dignified retirement you've earned.

Maybe 23 cents doesn't sound like a lot to someone with a Swiss bank account, Cayman Island Investments and an IRA worth tens of millions of dollars. But Governor Romney, when we lose 23 cents every hour, every day, every paycheck, every job, over our entire lives, what we lose can't just be measured in dollars.

Three years ago, the house passed the paycheck Fairness Act to level the playing field for America's women. Senate Republicans blocked it. Mitt Romney won't even say if he supports it. President Obama does. In the end, I didn't get a dime of the money I was shortchanged.

But this fight became bigger than Lilly Ledbetter. Today, it's about my daughter. It's about my granddaughter. It's about women and men. It's about families. It's about equality and justice.

This cause, which bears my name, is bigger than me. It's as big as all of you. This fight, which began as my own, is now our fight—a fight for the fundamental American values that make our country great. And with President Barack Obama, we're going to win. Thank you very much. God bless America.

Lilly Ledbetter's Personal Life and Family:

Lilly McDaniel was born in April 1938. She married Charles Ledbetter and together they had two children: Vicky and Phillip Charles, who both married and had children of their own. At this writing, Lilly has four grandchildren. Her husband, CSM Charles J. Ledbetter (U.S. Army ret.), was a highly-decorated veteran. Sadly, he passed away December 11, 2008 at the age of 73 and did not live long enough to see President Obama sign The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 into law on January 29, 2009.Now 73, Lilly lives in Jacksonville, Alabama on a small pension and like many Americans worries about losing her home.

Lilly Ledbetter, A Humble, New American Icon:

Lilly Ledbetter was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber for nineteen years before she discovered that she was paid far less for the same work as her male peers were being paid. She filed a lawsuit against Goodyear, and after a long legal battle, her case was ultimately decided by the U.S. Supreme Court; she lost. The Supreme Court stated she had taken too long to file a complaint. This decision, which made it easier for employers to get away with wage discrimination practices, would become a hotly contested legal issue by both Democrats and Republicans: McCain had "Joe the Plumber" and Obama had "Lilly Ledbetter."

A Hard Worker Despite Tough Conditions:

From 1979 to 1998 Lilly worked tirelessly at a Goodyear plant on an overnight shift from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. where she was subjected daily to sexual discrimination and harassment. She received a "Top Performance Award" in 1996, but her raises never matched her performance and were not in line with those given to men.In 2007, she testified before Congress about her EEOC complaint about a supervisor who demanded sexual favors if she wanted good job performance reviews. He was reassigned, but asserting her rights only made things worse and led to isolation, further sexual discrimination, and retaliation against Ledbetter.

Lilly's Anonymous Angel:

Lilly signed a contract with her employer that she would not discuss pay rates with other workers. She had no way of knowing that she was being underpaid until just before her retirement when a source that remains anonymous today, slipped a note into her mailbox. The note listed the salaries of three other men doing the same who were being paid $4,286 to $5,236 per month. Lilly was only making $3,727 per month. When she filed a complaint with the EEOC she was subsequently assigned to lift heavy tires. She was in her 60s at the time but she continued to perform the tasks her ruthless employer required of her.

Why What She Did Mattered:

Lilly had no idea she was being underpaid. She was prohibited from asking about or talking about pay wages. She did not have tangible evidence until she was ready to retire 19 years into her employment that she was being cheated.Ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that to have legal standing, a person must file a complaint within 180 of the first discriminatory pay practice - even if they did not know about it until much later. This allowed employers to get away with underpaying workers based on color, sex, or other discriminatory reasons as long as workers did not know about it and take legal immediate action.

A Selfless Cause:

Ledbetter played an important role speaking to politicians, Congress, and even Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in an effort to persuade the need for change. John McCain and Sarah Palin both agreed with the U.S. Supreme Court decision (McCain did not support fair pay acts that would legislate equal pay for women). McCain also made negative statements about Ledbetter's cause and even deemed the proposed legislation a "trial lawyer's dream."Ledbetter, a humble woman, challenged laws that did not protect workers from discrimination even though she herself would never directly benefit from her efforts.

In Lilly's Own Words:

In an April 22, 2008 blog post Lilly wrote the following entry:
"I am in Washington this week, going from Senate office to Senate office to build support for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act - legislation that bears my name. I would never have guessed this is what I would be doing at this point in my life! "I worked hard at Goodyear, and was good at my job. But with every paycheck, I got less than I deserved and less than the law says I am entitled to.
"It [the Supreme Court decision] was a step backward, and a terrible decision not just for me but for all the women who may have to fight wage discrimination."

Lilly Ledbetter Cannot Benefit From the New Law, But Other Women Can:

Lilly Ledbetter’s case against Goodyear cannot be retried and the new law she helped to pass will not get her restitution from Goodyear. Lilly reports at age 70 she still lives “paycheck to paycheck” (her retirement wages are based on the discriminatory wages she was paid). "I will be a second-class citizen for the rest of my life... It affects every penny I have today."But as she headed to Washington, D.C. for the signing of the new law bearing her name she enthusiastically stated, "I'm just thrilled that this has finally passed and sends a message to the Supreme Court: You got it wrong."

Time Line of Legal Events in Lilly Ledbetter vs. Goodyear:

  • 1979 - November 1998: Lilly worked as an area manager for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company at its Gadsden, Alabama plant. March 1998: Ledbetter submitted a questionnaire to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) inquiring about salaries.
  • July 1998: Submitted formal EEOC charge. Two key claims asserted by Ledbetter: a Title VII pay discrimination claim and a claim under the Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA), 29 U. S. C. §206(d). After she filed a complaint, Ledbetter, then in her 60's, was reassigned to lift heavy tires; clearly an act of retribution by Goodyear.
The District Court allowed some of Ledbetter's claims, including her Title VII pay discrimination claim to proceed to trial. But the District Court granted summary judgment in favor of Goodyear on several of her claims, including her Equal Pay Act claim.
  • November 1998: Ledbetter retired early and filed suit "asserting, among other things, a sex discrimination claim under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964." A jury awarded Ledbetter about $3.3 million, but the amount was later reduced to around $300,000.
  • November 2006 - May 2007: Goodyear appealed to the U.S. Supreme court who overturned the lower court's ruling in favor of Goodyear. In a 5-4 vote it was decided that Ledbetter was not entitled to compensation because she filed her claim more than 180 days after receiving her first discriminatory paycheck. (Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., 550 U.S. 618; R048; No. 05-1074; Argued 11/27/06; Decided 05/29/07.
  • January 2009: The battle continued with several bills being introduced to change the law. On January 29, 2009, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 was signed into law by President Barack Obama.

Daughter would not even pretend...

When my daughter was in second grade the teacher was trying to teach about the importance of elections. The teacher was dividing the class into Democrats and Republicans and they were going to do a mock election in the class. The teacher told my daughter she was going to be the Republican candidate. My daughter told her NO. The teacher said, but it is just pretend. And my daughter said, that is not something you even pretend. She was not even going to pretend to be a Republican!

Then the teacher was explaining all the different levels of government from the county level up. My daughter was able to tell her all the names and offices of the county government officials and also all the state officials. The teacher was totally shocked. She could not believe that a child that age even knew about that kind of stuff. What that teacher didn't know is that my daughter had been around all those people from the day she was born. She had been to fund raisers and rallies and all those people "babysat" her, while I was at those events doing the decorating or serving or whatever was needed for a successful event.

My daughter could not wait to turn 18 to be able to register to vote. She was so excited to be able to cast a vote for Bill Clinton, someone she had known all her life. She was also honored when Bill Clinton sent her a letter congratulating her for turning 18 and being old enough to vote. She will always be a "Yellow Dog Democrat," because she knows how important the programs they support are to the everyday person. She is amazed that grown people can't see what she knew in second grade. That they would support that other party that is always trying to take away the rights of the people.

My daughter framed her letter from Bill Clinton with the White House birthday greeting and proudly displays it in her living room at her house.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN DANGER!!

Dr. Maya Angelou is a woman I admire and this Obama campaign letter I received in my e-mail is another reminder of how important the 2012 Presidential Election is for all of us. She and I both believe that it is our job to vote. It is a responsibility, right and privilege of every US citizen to cast their ballot. Women worked too many years to get the right to vote. This year our vote is more important than ever, the Republican candidates are going to pass laws and appoint the next members to the Supreme Court to take away women's rights.

Dear Brenda,

I am not writing to you as a black voter, or a woman voter, or as a voter who is over 70 years old and six feet tall. I am writing to you as a representative of this great country -- as an American.

It is your job to vote. It is your responsibility, your right, and your privilege. You may be pretty or plain, heavy or thin, gay or straight, poor or rich.

But remember this: In an election, every voice is equally powerful -- don't underestimate your vote. Voting is the great equalizer.

Voting has already begun in some states that President Obama needs to win.

As a country, we can scarcely perceive the magnitude of our progress.

My grandmother and my uncle experienced circumstances that would break your heart. When they went to vote, they were asked impossible questions like, "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" When they couldn't answer, they couldn't vote.

I once debated with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. about whether an African American would ever be elected president. He believed it would happen within the next 40 years at the time -- I believed it would never happen within my lifetime.

I have never been happier to have been proven wrong.

And since President Barack Obama's historic election, we've moved forward in courageous and beautiful ways. More students can afford college, and more families have access to affordable health insurance. Women have greater opportunities to get equal pay for equal work.

Yet as Rev. King wrote, "All progress is precarious."

So don't sit on the sidelines. Don't hesitate. Don't have any regrets. Vote.

Your vote is not only important. It's imperative.

Thank you,

Dr. Maya Angelou

Pumpkin Painting by Kimberly

My friend Darla has the sweetest Granddaughter Kimberly. The school where Kimberly attends really promotes art. The teachers even post the students art work on the website Artsonia.com for others to enjoy. Once a week I get an e-mail the asks me to vote on the best art, from all over the United States, in various grade levels. This pumpkin painting above is one Kimberly has posted on Artsonia this week. I think Kimberly did a great job!

Craft Stick Pumpkin

Granny's Love came over and we were in a hurry to make our
craft stick pumpkins, before his mom came to get him.
That is why the glue is still wet in these photos.
We had lots of fun and he took them home with him.
Go to picmonkey.com to add "frames" to your photos.
I added "frames" to all of the photos in this post.
Picmonkey is easy to use and offers lots of choices.
We make our pumpkins with popcicle size orange craft sticks.
If using larger craft sticks just determine how many you need
by putting two sticks across the back to hold them together.
He is so funny!
He cut out the pieces for his pumpkin face.
Nothing in the world is more fun than doing things with your Grandchildren!

Trying to Photograph My Cats

Trying to photograph my cats is quite a feat. They do not cooperate.
It reminds me of trying to photograph my kids when they were little.
They look away about the time I snap the photo.
I have seen cat photos with the cats in perfect pose or wearing outfits.
Not my cats!
Check out the mean look Callie Ann is giving me in this photo.

I caught Lizzie Tu asleep on the back of my chair for this photo.
She is such a dark gray color I need her under lots of light for photos.

Callie Ann is standing on top of my keyboard in this photo.
I cropped it to just her face using www.picmonkey.com

I got up really close and woke Lizzie Tu up for this photo.
You can tell she was NOT amused to be woke up:)

My daughter's cat Grace is always posing!

Saving Garden Seeds

Saving garden seeds can save you money and allows you to have your favorite garden items the next year. Whether you have leftover seeds, or you’re not ready to plant right away, storing them properly is important to ensure germination happens when planted later. Save seeds for years to come with  simple-to-make seed storing ideas.
Ideas from Home made Simple
(If you have not signed up to receive the Home made simple newsletter I recommend it. Home made simple offers great tips and ideas to use around the home.)

Look around your house...you probably already have all the things to make good seed saving storage.
Bags and Envelopes: Ensure dryness and a dark environment by placing seed packets in plastic zipper bags and envelopes before tucking into containers.
Containers: Re-use empty spice or mason jars, lip balm containers, candy or tea tins, medicine bottles, film canisters or a file box with an organized folder system.
Labels: Keep everything organized, and add a touch of fun, whimsical organization with our creative labeling ideas or homemade plant markers.
Silica Gel: This moisture-absorbing substance will help keep seeds dry and can be purchased cheaply at your local crafts store or saved from boxes of new shoes.

Tip: If you can’t find silica gel, wrap a tablespoon of dry rice in a napkin, secure it with a rubber band, then drop it in the container with the seeds.
Tip: While seed tape helps keep your garden tidy and evenly spaced, it’s also a great way to package seeds for easy use next season.

Store seeds in a dry, cool and dark spot such as a chilly basement or cellar.
Seeds typically last a few years, so date the packages and use the oldest first.
If saving seeds from your own plants, spread them out on paper towels or newspaper to air-dry for a few days, then package and store.

Tip: Some seeds are hard to store—because they are delicious to eat! Bake pumpkin seeds,(see blog post 8-3-12 about pumpkin seeds.) roast sunflower seeds, or make salad dressing with poppy seeds.

These medicine containers are awesome for saving seeds.

They come in three different sizes and prices.
