The Mark

The Mark Restaurant - 601 East Main Street - Weatherford, Oklahoma
Another Historic Route 66 landmark and good place to eat.
Yummy! This was my hamburger steak, topped with swiss cheese, grilled onions, red and green bell peppers. You get your choice of sides and I love the oven baked potato and corn. That was my husband's lemon pie behind the plate. I ate my piece of chocolate pie before I got my meal. This meal also comes with a salad and soup bar.
The Mark Restaurant has been in Weatherford since 1959. The story has been told that Ed Berrong and his partners were discussing what to name their new restaurant and motel venture. Ed's teenaged son, Mark came into the room and said that is easy just name it THE MARK. And so, it has been The Mark from that day forward. When you stay at the Mark Motel you get a free breakfast at the Mark Restaurant.
The Mark Best Western Motel is one of the best in Western Oklahoma and we love to eat at the Mark Restaurant. If you are ever traveling on Route 66 stop in Weatherford and at THE MARK.

Jambalaya Mix

Tired of holiday food? Need a quick and easy meal?
Try ZATARAIN'S NEW ORLEANS STYLE
JAMBALAYA MIX
2 1/2 Cups water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
Bring to a boil
Add Zatarain's Jambalaya Mix and return to boil
Reduce heat, stir, cover and simmer over low heat 25 minutes
Brown smoked sausages a little while the Jambalaya Mix cooks
Stir sausages into Jambalaya Mix fluff together and serve.
A great 30 minute meal!
(We cooked ours a little extra with the lid off the pot to steam out more liquid.)
We ate ours with Kentucky Wonder style beans.
The Jambalaya Mix is plenty spicy for most people, but we had ours with hot sauce.

Good Nail Polish

FINALLY!!! I FOUND IT...Nail polish that will stay on my nails!
Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear Nail Color
Sally Hansen No Chip Acrylic Top Coat
It was an accident that I found a nail polish that will actually stay on my nails. I was looking for something else at Walgreens, and saw this polish on sale for $1.99...ok I thought for that price I will give it a try. I picked out some colors that I liked and went home to try it out.

Two coats of the nail color, let it dry and add two coats of the acrylic top coat! It stays on my toe nails for a full month and the polish is still ok, but my nails have grown. This is good stuff!

I am not much of a nail polish person, but do like to have it on my toe nails. It looks good on my finger nails, because I have those hard nails that grow like crazy. I just can't sit still long enough to allow it to dry on my finger nails.

Christmas in the ER

CHRISTMAS IN THE ER
Downtown on our way back home, Christmas night.

2011 started with our granddaughter spending January 5, 6, 7 in the PICU at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. For the rest of this year, her Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes has been under control fairly well. She always has roller coaster sugar levels. On Christmas Day she started getting sick at her stomach and then her blood sugar levels went straight up!

She went into another episode of diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis is distinguished from other diabetic emergencies by the presence of large amounts of ketones in blood and urine, and marked metabolic acidosis. It is life threatening.

Her mom took her to the local emergency room where they worked on her until around noon and then decided she needed to go to Baptist Hospital in OKC. We followed the ambulance to the city, while her mom went home to grab some things they would need at the hospital. The ambulance driver told Shelby that her Granny was keeping up with them pretty good. She told the driver that her Granny could drive faster than that if they wanted. I would have taken a photo of "following the ambulance," but we were running 80 mph when I thought about it!
This IV pole in her room was just too cool...
other rooms have monkeys with bananas on top.
If you are ever in Oklahoma City and need a hospital I would recommend Baptist Hospital.
They are so good to our "baby" girl.

On the way home Christmas night,
I stopped at our little downtown "pocket park" and took these photos.
I just love these pole decorations.
This is a cute little tree the city decorated in this park.

Finally It Was Christmas!

Finally It Was Christmas!
Our Christmas in Arkansas

My son and his Granddaughter, my Great Granddaughter
Note: that cute little dress has a cat on it!
Great Granddaughter and Great Niece
These innocent looking dolls the girls are holding sing the LOUDEST rap type song you ever heard!
My Mother got them so we know her Cochlear Implant does not always work.

And then there was the second Christmas....Our Oklahoma Christmas
My friend Pat found a program to turn photographs into coloring book pages,
and Granny's Love thought this was the best thing ever! It was his favorite present.
Granddaughter
Granny's Love (aka Grandson) thought this was too cool.
Motion activated squawks and sticks its head out with mouth open.

A Merry Christmas was had by all....and to all a good night!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

Here I am at four years old reading the new Bible I got for Christmas.
My sister Gwen beside me was three years old.
These are my cousins Kathy and Mary with their new baby buggies at Christmas.
Mary is just older than me and Kathy is just younger than my sister.
Here we are at Christmas a couple years later.
Left to right Kathy, Mary, Me, Gwen.
Our Grandmother, who only allowed us to call her Mama Gen is holding baby Elaine.
The twin boys in front, Elaine's brothers, are Jack and Jim.

It doesn't matter if it was Christmas over fifty years ago or Christmas today, it is the memories that we make with our loved ones. It is photos like these that we can look back and remember the fun we had and how blessed we were to have those who are no longer with us. Blessings to you and yours and have a very Merry Christmas.

Felt Gift Bags

The felt gift bag above was $2.50 at Family Dollar. I took some glitter glue and wrote the name on the bag. The bags below still have wet glitter glue on them. I love these bags for things when I do not have a box or odd shaped or hard to wrap gifts. Writing the name on the bag also makes that child feel special and they can also play with the bag after Christmas. They would make wonderful "Santa" bags too!

Sock Cozy

SOCK COZY
Do you have odd socks with no mate?
Use them to make a sock cozy.
Simply cut the sock and slip on a glass or cup.
Turn down the edges of the sock or roll them down to hide the cut edges.
Great idea if you have people over, they can have a personalized cup to know which is theirs.
This is also a very easy project for the kids to make.
The sock cozy could be embellished with beads, buttons, or other decorations.

Riunite Lambrusco

I have read on several blogs about various types of wine. I wanted to share with you my favorite. My daughter got this for me as a special treat, because she knows I won't get it for myself. Riunite Lambrusco is such a good tasting wine, and I am pretty sure it would go on the "glass a day for your heart list!"
I had never seen the little individual serving four pack.
I did not ask her how much it cost, but when I was younger it was a moderate price.
If you are looking for a good holiday wine I would recommend Riunite Lambrusco.

Tie the card on the box of fudge brownie mix with the curly ribbon and you are ready to go!
Seems like we always end up with needing a little extra gift...what are your quick gift ideas?

Surprise in the Mail

My daughter came home from work to find this nice surprise in her mail box. The package was from Target. She got it because she subscribes to a magazine, that probably sold their mailing list to Target. She was tickled to get the pretty bag, and she gave the hair products to one of her friends. Normally I would be ticked off if someone sold their mailing list to another company, but this time it was nice for my daughter.

Sweet Potato Pasta Salad

If you are looking for something different to fix for the holidays try one of my favorites.

SWEET POTATO and RED PEPPER ANGEL HAIR PASTA SALAD:

8 ounces angel hair pasta
2 tablespoons olive oil (or regular oil) divided
2 tablespoons minced garlic
3 cups shredded, peeled sweet potato
1 large red bell pepper, sliced thin
1 cup diced cherry or small tomatoes
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped chives or other fresh herb you like
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
you can also use crumbled goat cheese, but I leave this out
This is not a good photo, but this is a wonderful salad!
1. Cook pasta until just tender according to package directions.
2. Place 1 tablespoon oil and garlic in a large skillet. Cook until garlic is sizzling.
Add sweet potato, bell pepper, tomatoes and water and cook, stirring occasionally,
until bell pepper is tender. Remove from heat and keep warm.
3. Drain the pasta, reserving 1/2 cup of the cooking water. Return the pasta to the pot.
Add the vegetable mixture, the remaining 1 tablespoon oil, parsley, chives, lemon juice,
salt and cheese if you use it. Toss to combine. Add the reserved pasta water, 2 spoons at
a time until you reach the consistency you like.

As you can see in the photo above, we served this salad on a lunch buffet and it was a hit!

Christmas Songs

I love Christmas songs, but usually by the time Christmas rolls around I am ready for them to stop playing for another year. This is not the case with Clay Aiken's Merry Christmas with Love album, I have it downloaded in my vehicle. Don't ask me why, because I have no idea! I find my self listening to his smooth tones at various times of the year. I know that comes under the "crazy old lady" category.

Jar Ring/Christmas Card Ornaments

I always save my Christmas cards and make gift tags for the next year. Just cut out the "neat part" of the card with my craft scissors and punch a hole in the corner and tie on a piece of curly ribbon to attach to the gift.
This year I had to dip into some of my Christmas cards and recycle into a jar lid ring ornaments.
Just cut out a circle to fit inside the jar lid and another circle to fit on the outside and glue the two circles back to back on the jar lid ring. I found these rings at a second hand store twenty cents for a bag full.
Then glue ribbon around the jar ring and make a bow on top to attach ornament hanger.
The red glittery one in the middle was made with glittered craft foam.
This is my favorite! I was making these for my Granddaughter and she loves OU!!!

Christmas Movies

You can pretty much turn on Hallmark and I am a happy camper, watching Christmas themed movies. I was trying to think of the name of one of Granny's Love's animated movies, that I couldn't find in our selection (it must be at his house), any way I found that WIKIPEDIA has this wonderful list of Christmas Movies. Some I have never even heard of and some are among my favorites. Some of the movies on the list I would NOT watch at all...I do not like scary or violent movies at all!
