Oklahoma Route 66 - Peace and Love

These vehicles made me laugh...
what were they thinking?
Station wagons...were so cool back in the day.

Peace and Love on Route 66
Awesome old cameras.
I loved drive-in movies as a child and taking my children.

Oklahoma Route 66 - Travel and Eating

Lee Way Transport was one of the early Trucking Companies.

This car was so shiny the floor is reflected on it!
Lots of neon lighting in the museum:)
Ice Cream Fountain
Tribute to the "diner" in this nook was so cool.
The Juke box was so beautiful.
Pop Hicks Restaurant - Clinton, Oklahoma
Pop Hicks burned and all that is left is the tile floor.
These Photos are NOT at the Museum...
I took these before they tore down the foundation of the building.

Oklahoma Route 66 - Early Days

The Mother Road began in Chicago, the historical gateway to the West, travel through St. Louis, Missouri, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Amarillo, Texas, Tucumcari and Gallup, New Mexico, Holbrook and Flagstaff, Arizona and finally to Barstow and Los Angeles, California covering roughly 2,400 miles.

Travel was not the most comfortable going across the country,
on the narrow cement two lane road.
The vehicles would over heat crossing the dessert, so a water bag was needed.
Travelers loaded everything they could get in their vehicle to make the move west.
Displays of various service station items are found at the museum.

Oklahoma Route 66 Museum Clinton, Oklahoma

At the beginning of the month I shared the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas with you. Now, I would like to share my tour of the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum...I LOVE all things Route 66. Pieces of the original Mother Road can still be found running through Weatherford, Oklahoma where we live. I will share some of my favorite things I saw at the Clinton, Oklahoma museum over the next few days. Hope you enjoy the tour through my eyes:)

I found this information about the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum on their website.

Museum History

The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum is operated by The Oklahoma Historical Society, a state agency. The museum was originally opened to the public in 1968 as the Museum of the Western Trails, operated by the Oklahoma Industrial Trust and Recreation Department (which later became the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation). In 1991 the museum was transferred to OHS. In 1993 plans began for a redevelopment of the museum in order to focus on transportation and Route 66. The project was funded with federal, state and private funds, with the citizens of Clinton (population approximately 10,000) raising over $200,000.00.
The museum officially opened on September 23, 1995, as the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum with a grand opening celebration in Clinton including car shows, free live entertainment, a rock’n roll dance and many other activities.
Exhibits begin with “The World’s Largest Curio Cabinet,” home of special treasures collected from along the route. An audio tour written and narrated by Michael Wallis, author of Route 66: The Mother Road, will guide visitors through six decades of Route 66 history. Along the way visitors see vehicles and listen to music while they experience the history and culture of each decade concerning road construction, transportation, lodging, restaurants, garages, curio shops, attractions, and other artifacts, graphics, and videos. At the end of their trip down the “Main Street of America,” visitors catch their breath in the drive-in theater, before stopping in the “Curio” gift shop with its wide selection of signs, books, videos, clothing, toys, games and numerous other mementos, of Route 66 and the Museum.
