Stained Glass

My friend Jo from Georgia sent me this beautiful stained glass work of art she made before she passed away. I have it hanging in my kitchen window and it is one of the first things I see every day as I take my morning medicine. Jo was an awesome artist and I also am lucky enough to own some of her watercolor paintings. When she moved to Georgia she met a lady named Doris who had a stained glass studio. Doris is a master stained glass artist and taught Jo how do this piece. They traveled around Georgia buying glass and other supplies. Jo would tell me about all their adventures and the fun they had. This stained glass art piece makes me smile!
This is the front side of the piece.
This is the backside of the piece.

Our local Vocational Technical school has a stained glass class for adults in the evening. I knew of an insurance salesman that took a class in the city and turned his stained glass hobby into a full time career! He now has displays in retail shops and travels to various art shows around the state. He almost always wins awards for his stained glass. I love it when people can do something they love and earn a living at the same time.

You can take classes, or you can also find lots of how to videos on the internet, if you want to learn how to do stained glass art. I would have to take the classes and have someone actually show me how. I do know that there are tools needed for stained glass, Jo was lucky to have Doris who let her borrow things she already had.

Before you begin your first stained glass project, here are some essential tools and supplies you will need.
• glass cutter
• breaking pliers
• running pliers
• glass grinder
• soldering iron
• temperature controller
• various stained glass for design
• copper foil
• solder
• flux
• finishing compound

This all sounds very complicated to me, but if you want more details check out the following website: How to Make Stained Glass Step by Step Instructions

Patch Favorite Jeans

My Granddaughter's favorite jeans are Z co. brand. They come with frayed places and look wrinkled. Since there are places that already are thread bare on them, her two favorite pair ended up with big gaping holes. She brought them to me to see if I could make them so she could still wear them. The only idea I could come up with was to put fabric patches under the holes and stitch around the hole to hold the fabric in place. I had seen some new jeans in the store that was already made that way! Now she loves her "new" jeans. When I was her age having to wear anything patched was so embarrasing! If you need to get your kids or grandkids "in style" or give something a "new look" get out the material basket and patch their clothes.
She loved the first pair with the purple fabric patches, because purple is her current favorite color. The second pair I used a navy fabric with little red apples and light blue dots. Since I did the patching by hand I put a piece of cardboard down in the leg, so I would not sew the leg front to the back. By sewing the patch under the hole it still left her the frayed look she loves.
I know the stores sell iron on patches, but these are one-of-a-kind looks for a one-of-a-kind Granddaughter! Next time I am going to teach her how to sew the patches on her jeans.

Backpacks

Now that school is back in session, this is a reminder that it is important to pay attention to the backpacks. I see students that carry all of their books in their backpacks, because they feel that they do not have time to go to their lockers between classes. This can cause health problems.

Back-to-school backpack reminder... When children start piling their school supplies into their backpacks, parents should be aware of how much weight they are carrying, according to an expert at Baylor College of Medicine.

"Carrying a heavy backpack can be an issue, and parents should be sure children are carrying no more than 10 to 15 percent of their body weight in their backpacks," said Dr. Rubin Bashir, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at BCM. "For example, a 100 pound child should not carry a backpack that weighs more than 15 pounds."

Backpacks can be a pain...Bashir said that research has shown some relation between increased backpack weight and an increase in back pain in children.

As children get older, the books get heavier, so heavy backpacks are hard to avoid, acknowledges Bashir.
If a child complains of back pain, parents should look into how much weight they are carrying in their backpacks.
Assess the situation...Bashir also makes the following suggestions:

>Be sure children are carrying backpacks on both shoulders

>Make sure backpacks are not hanging low, but are snug and high on children's backs

>Use backpacks with a waist strap to help carry the load

>Keep an extra copy of books at home so children aren't carrying them to and from school

>Consider purchasing a rolling backpack
Parents always need to check their children's backpacks daily...you never know what they might put in them or there might be an important note from the teacher.

Wedding Day

CONGRATULATIONS
STEPHANIE AND JOSHUA

Today dear daughter, as you walk down the aisle
You'll see all the faces wearing a smile.
But as we remember you in those younger years,
Our smiles will conceal a few hidden tears.
It isn't through sadness, our emotions just whirl
As we're both thinking back to that little girl.
And now you have grown and make us so proud,
As you smile for the camera and the rest of the crowd
Remember Stephanie, as you become a new wife
You will always be very much a part of our life!
Now we have a daughter, and are gaining a son,
Your new lives as husband and wife have begun
So be blissfully happy and enjoy your big day
Best wishes for a wonderful marriage we say!
We Love You, Pop and Mom

Fall Wreath Craft

I took my husband to a meeting in Eastern Oklahoma and had plenty of time to "kill." I ventured into the Hobby Lobby just to look around. I spotted a cute little grapevine wreath that was on sale for half price. I thought it would be fun to make a simple fall wreath. I started looking around the fall craft section and found a package of squirrels, acorns and leaves. The package had plenty for a wreath with left overs for another project. Cost for the wreath was only $8.50.
Back at the hotel I laid out the squirrels, acorns and leaves on top of the grapevine wreath.
They have a peel and stick backing, but I used Elmer's glue to really attach them to the wreath.
You could add a big bow on top of the wreath, but I wanted to hang it in a small space.  I just used the plastic tag that was already attached to the wreath to hang it from my wreath hanger. Compared to the high dollar pre-made wreaths, I like my simple little fall wreath.

Easy Grilled Fajitas

My daughter makes easy grilled fajitas and sent me these photos to share on this blog.
She made beef, chicken and shrimp fajitas using round steak, chicken breasts and shrimp.
Fajita Seasoning
Limes
Round Steak
Chicken Breasts (boneless/skinless)
Shrimp
Flour Tortillas
Sour Cream
Shredded Cheese (your choice of kind)
Onions sauteeded in butter
Chunky Salsa
(I would have used green bell peppers and tomatoes. Cooking the peppers with the onions.)
She takes the round steak and squeezes lime juice on it. Put lime on chicken and shrimp too.
To make the lime easier to get the juice out roll them on your counter top back and forth with the palm of your hand until they feel kinda soft. It makes a big difference in getting all the juice out.
Next she puts lots of Fajita Seasoning on the round steak. When my daughter cooks she NEVER measures anything! I ask how much and she says LOTS.
Next she tenderizes the round steak by whacking on it with a meat tenderizer.
She lets the meat set for a bit to allow the Fajita Seasoning and lime to work its magic on the meat. She satuees her onions and shrimp in butter.
After grilling the round steak and chicken she slices the beef in thin strips.
The chicken can be cut in chunks or smaller pieces if you desire.
Below is a open shrimp fajita. Roll up flour tortilla to eat and enjoy.
Chicken fajita just like the shrimp, with onions, sour cream, cheese and salsa!
Beef fajitas are my personal favorite.
There are many ways that people make fajitas, but my daughter's fajitas are so easy and so good! She is a really good cook....she learned how to cook from my husband. (That is one of the good things he taught her.) The older she gets the more like him she becomes. He says it is like talking to himself when he is around her.

My Plate

I found this post on Care2 and wanted to share it with you. I love this new My Plate program. I think it is just such an easy way to teach children and adults about the things they should be eating.

By Margaret Badore for DietsInReview.com

The coming school year will be the first since MyPlate was introduced by the USDA and Michelle Obama as the official replacement for MyPyramid. The real success of the new icon is yet to be determined, and lies much in the hands of the educators who will use it in their classrooms. Many schools are preparing to incorporate MyPlate into their curricula for all age groups, and it is also already being used in nutrition education for adults and families.

“MyPyramid has gone through changes over its lifetime,” Sharre Littrell told DietsInReview in an interview. “I would say that this is the first one that I feel is really consumer-friendly, because we don’t eat in a pyramid. We eat on a plate.”

Littrell is an adult and youth nutrition educator for UC Davis Cooperative Extension (UCCE), an organization that helps educate communities in California about healthy eating. In the fall, UCCE educators will visit about 55 low-income schools to teach both students and teachers about healthy foods and to distribute curricula for future use. Although the school year hasn’t started yet, Littrell has been using the MyPlate icon in family educational sessions offered by a number of different programs.

For Littrell and her colleague Josie Rucklose, incorporating MyPlate into an existing lesson plans was not much of a challenge because MyPyramid is based on the many of the same underlying principles. “We’re already talking about fruit and vegetable consumption, we’re already talking about whole grain consumption, but what we get to do now is incorporate that by showing them a plate,” explained Littrell.

Other educators concur. “Instead of including MyPyramid, you can just easily switch it to MyPlate and do really similar lessons,” said Len Saunders, author of Keeping Kids Fit and P.E. teacher. “It’s just a little bit easier to explain it to the children when it’s on a plate. Trying to find out how a pyramid resembles food is very hard for some young kids.”

Most teachers feel that MyPlate is an improvement over MyPyramid, because it’s simpler and delivers a more concrete message. “It’s interesting because it’s not really a different concept. It’s a different way to present the concept. From my point of view, the pyramid is more academic,” said Concepcion Mendoza, PhD and the UCCE program adviser. “But MyPlate is the application of this knowledge in the most practical way.”

Jewelry Hanger Wash Board

Here is a way to recycle an old wash board if you ever run across one at a garage sale or auction. Just spray paint it in any color you desire, then add some decorative decals or paint something in the top flat area, screw in some cup hooks and you have a usable antique. This one belongs to my Mom.
As you can see there is plenty of space to add additional cup hooks to hang more items.
I just look at this wash board and think how hard it would have been to scrub all the washing using this board. I am thankful that today we have automatic washers and dryers. I remember hanging laundry out to dry on the clothes line. I still love the smell of air dried bed sheets, but in Western Oklahoma the wind would make them fly off a clothes line!
I know there must be other ways to recycle an old wash board. Do you have any ideas?

Gift Bow Alternative

I found this cute button to use in place of the birthday gift bow for a child's party.

Bows annoy me.
They get squashed on the way to the party.
They get tossed in the trash the minute the gift is opened.
I have tried to rescue them from being tossed, it was not worth the effort.
They are too expensive for the time they last!

As least with this cute button, it will be taken off the gift and wore during the party.

September Head Lice Month

I read somewhere that September was National Head Lice Prevention Month, I thought I should share information about head lice with you. First of all I want to dispel the notion that people who are not clean get head lice....NOT TRUE....head lice are more attracted to clean heads of hair, because it is easier for them to attach the the shaft of the hair.

My first encounter with head lice was thirty years ago! I laugh now, but it was NOT funny at the time. For some reason my daughter was at my mother's house, don't remember why because my mom rarely kept my children. At any rate, my daughter (who is now 34) was scratching her head so my mom looked at her scalp and found a bug. Mom put the bug in a tiny bottle and off to the pharmacy they went. Mom was horrified when the pharmacist told her my daughter had head lice. Of course, Mom yelled at me for "letting her get head lice." Gave me a lecture about washing her hair, etc. As I said, I laugh now, but not then. My daughter had her waist length long thick thick thick blonde curly hair washed every night, when she took her bath. It was NOT funny.

Since then I have had the pleasure? of getting aquainted with several bouts of head lice. I have called the school superintendent, the county health department, other parents and grandparents, teachers, etc. in the quest to rid the schools of head lice. One time I went to the store and purchased seventy dollars worth of RID, lined up every kid I could find, that had been around my children, and we had a RID shampoo party!  I get ticked at the public schools when they allow kids in the building with head lice. I hate head lice!!! Now my head is itching just writing this blog post!
Staying Ahead of Lice

Watch for signs of head lice, such as frequent head scratching. Anyone can get head lice... mainly by head-to-head contact but also from sharing hats, brushes and headrests. Lice do not jump or fly.

Check all family members for lice and nits (lice eggs) at least once a week. Only those infested should be treated. Lice are reddish-brown wingless insects, nits are grayish-white, always oval shaped, and are glued at an angle to the side of the hair shaft.
Be sure not to confuse nits with hair debris such as bright irregularly shaped clumps of dandruff stuck to the hair shaft or elongated segments of dandruff encircling the hair shaft and easily dislodged. Lice treatment is not appropriate for hair debris.

Consult your pharmacist or physician before applying or using lice treatment pesticides when the person involved is pregnant, nursing, has allergies, asthma, epilepsy, has pre-existing medical conditions, or has lice or nits in the eyebrows or eyelashes. Never use a pesticide on or near the eyes.

Remember, all lice-killing products are pesticides. If you choose to purchase an over-the-counter treatment, follow the directions carefully and use with caution. If the product fails, do not switch to other over-the-counter treatments or use any prescription products as a "last resort". This can be potentially harmful. Manual Removal is the safe alternative and a necessary component to any head lice treatment regimen.

Follow package directions carefully. Use the product over the sink, not in the tub or shower. Always keep the eyes covered.

Remove all nits. This assures total lice treatment. Separate hair in sections and remove all attached nits with a special lice comb, baby safety scissors, or your fingernails.

I love Tea Tree Oil (found in health food stores), I kept tea tree oil and poured it into all household shampoo. It helped keep head lice away! It does smell strong when you use it, but the smell goes away fast. I recommend tea tree oil.

Wash bedding and recently worn clothing in hot water and dry in a hot dryer. Combs and brushes may be soaked in hot water (not boiling) for 10 minutes.

Avoid lice sprays! Vacuuming is the safest and best way to remove lice or fallen hairs with attached nits from upholstered furniture, rugs, stuffed animals and car seats.

Notify your child's school, camp, child care provider, neighborhood parents, or anyone your child has been around. Check for lice on a regular basis. This is the best way to protect your family and community.
I am sorry if your head is now itching too.
