Muskogee Hampton Inn

My husband went to a meeting in Muskogee, Oklahoma and we stayed at the Hampton Inn. I would recommend this as a nice place to stay. The rooms are nice with very comfortable beds. Our room came with a king size bed, a hide-a-bed couch, refrigerator, microwave, bar sink, coffee pot, hair dryer, nice television, and internet. The staff at this place is extra friendly from the front desk to housekeeping. They serve a really nice breakfast with everything hot or cold you might want. In the middle of the afternoon they serve lemonade and fresh baked cookies. There is also an indoor swimming pool.

Cut the bottoms off 15 Diet Mountain Dew 2-liter bottles.

I bought 3 bunches of Poinsettias that had 6 blooms each for total of $3.00

(only used 14 of the blooms for the wreath)

Cut each bottle bottom and bend so they lay mostly flat.

Punch holes in the side of each and join together with floral wire.

Use the pliers to hold the nail over a flame (I used our cook stove) and heat the nail.

Poke two holes in the middle of each bottle bottom to be able to wire on the blooms.

(My plan was to hot glue the Poinsettia blooms on...

then I found my small gun and large glue sticks...

rest are at my daughters.)

Wire a Poinsettia bloom in the middle of each bottle bottom.

I wired the bow on the bottom on the "15th" bottle bottom.

I also used a piece of the same ribbon to tie on the top to make the wreath hanger.

This wreath could be made with so many variations. After buying the Poinsettia blooms, floral wire and ribbon this wreath cost less than $4.00! It took a lot more time than money to make it.

Then I decided to make another Diet Mt. Dew bottle bottom wreath...I only used 13 bottle bottoms in the wreath below. Used 12 flowers and attached the bow at the top instead of the bottom. I like the second wreath better than the first. I think the next one might have ornaments attached instead of flowers?

Thanksgiving Turkey on the way!

On a trip up across the Boston Mountains on Highway 540 to Fayetteville, Arkansas we passed your Thanksgiving Turkey on its way to get ready for Thanksgiving Dinner. Being from Arkansas this was a familiar site to me, but when I was showing photos to co-workers they had never seen a turkey truck. I decided I should share these with you too.

With my daughter driving I was able to take lots of photos on the trip!

Turkey and chicken trucks can been seen in Northwest Arkansas transporting the birds in these crates stacked on semi-trucks. Thank you to all the farmers!

Creamy Broccoli Tuna Helper

I signed up to do a product survey and received this box of TUNA HELPER CLASSIC CREAMY BROCCOLI PASTA AND NATURALLY FLAVORED CREAMY BROCCOLI SAUCE MIX. All I had to do was cook, eat and fill out some questions on the computer. Easy enough.

It was simple...I needed

1 1/2 cups hot water

1 3/4 cups milk

3 tablespoons margarine or butter

2 cans tuna, drained

I only had one can of tuna in the cabinet when the product arrived. I had already taken off my work clothes, and had no intention of getting dressed again, to go get another can of tuna. So I only used one can of tuna in the Tuna Helper.

First, stir together in 10-inch skillet:

 uncooked Pasta, Sauce Mix, hot water, milk, margarine and tuna.

Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally.

Reduce heat. Cover; simmer about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender.

Remove from heat; uncover and the sauce will thicken.

As you can see by the plate below it did thicken.

This was a easy, quick and tasty meal for a week night dinner. The thing I like most about this was that the Tuna Helper and canned tuna are both items you can have on hand in the cabinet. Betty Crocker has lots of other "Helpers," hamburger, chicken, oriental, etc. My only suggestion to the survey folks was that this one needed more broccoli.

I love Christmas and I love giving the baby a tree ornament. I found this one at Hobby Lobby.

Chisholm Trail Heritage Center

The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center is located in Duncan, Oklahoma and holds a wealth of knowledge about the trail and the American Cowboy. The center has lots of activities throughout the year for fun and education. It would be a great place to take the family. The Chisholm Trail is clearly marked down Highway 81 in Oklahoma.

The Beginning of the Chisholm Trail

By the end of the Civil War, Union and Confederate forces had consumed most of the beef east of the Mississippi. Up until then, pork had been the leading meat source in ordinary diets and now, millions of people had developed a taste for beef. As a result, when it was available, a steer would go for as much as $50 a head back east. During the Civil War, untended herds of wild longhorns multiplied by the millions. Texas ranchers had become "cattle-poor". Though thousands of cattle roamed the ranches, ranchers considered themselves lucky if they could get $3 a head. The shortage of beef in the East, together with an increasing taste for it, created a demand that promised great profits if the cattle-poor ranchers could get their herds to the eastern cattle markets.

 

With the end of the Civil War, cattlemen needed a new route to get their cattle to market. Joseph McCoy, an enterprising promoter, was the first to see promise in a shorter, more direct route through Indian Territory to the new railheads slowly moving west through Kansas Territory. Working a deal with the Railroad, McCoy built cattle pens and a new hotel at the railhead in Abilene, Kansas, then hired surveyors to mark a new route back south to Texas. They began with a route almost due south to Wichita, then followed Jesse Chisholm's trade road 220 miles to his trading post on the north Canadian River. From Jesse's trading post, they headed almost due south to Texas to the closest practical Red River crossing along the way, later known as Red River Station. With a safe, easy route from Texas across Indian Territory to Abilene, now marked, McCoy distributed handbills throughout southern Texas inviting cattlemen to bring their herds to Abilene.Thus, the legendary Chisholm Trail was born and in years to come a love affair with the old west and the American Cowboy would spread across our country and around the world that continues today.

This life size bronze statue is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I have ever seen.

Craft Room

One of the blogs I follow is Taylor Made...I love her blog and all the great ideas for making craft items. Recently she has been doing a series of CRAFT ROOM photos. This is what my craft area looks like...I share the space with a spare bedroom.

The corner behind the door and the closet door is where I keep my seasonal and scrapbook items. Extra basket paper and gifts can be found on the top shelf. I have always wanted to get containers or baskets, but I just use copy paper boxes or other boxes and write on them.

On the other side of the room I have my blog space...computer and ideas notebook. I also keep supplies for some current projects handy on the extra desk area. Taylor Made on the computer!

Next to that I have three more shelves that have boxes of fabric, ribbon, craft supplies, and many other things I might need. This time of year I set up a card table that works as a wrapping station for my Christmas gift wrapping. It is so much easier to keep a list of what I have purchased and what I have wrapped, to cut out some of the holiday stress! Plus, at my age you just can't remember.

Now do you see why I am jealous of all the beautiful craft rooms over at Taylor Made!

CD Turkey Craft

I have a small stack of those CD's that arrived in the mail trying to sell me something. I just put them up on my craft shelf, thinking that some day I would do a craft project with them. Here is one of the things I decided I could make out of one. Thanksgiving CD Turkey Fridge Magnet!

One CD

Craft Foam Sheets

Feathers or you could cut "feathers" out of the foam sheets

Glue

Black Sharpie or you could use a craft eye

I cut out a turkey head, beak, gobble, and feet from the foam sheets. Next I glued the head and feet (I know the feet are a little funny) on the back side of the CD. Then glued the beak and gobble on the front side of the head. Drew a eye on the head with the sharpie. Then I glued the feathers on the back of the CD and glued the magnet on top of the feathers. Granny's Love aka my grandson thought is was too cool.

This makes a colorful refrigerator magnet, but if you wanted to use as a hanging ornament just drill a tiny hole in the top of two CD's. Do not use the magnet. Glue a second CD on the back side and repeat the beak, gobble and eye on the back side.

This would make a fun classroom project.

Nature Crafts

Tessa Brotherton gave me this Nature Craft as a thank you. She took mat board, ribbons and leaves to compose this pretty piece of art. Some of her other creations used pressed flowers, or poems, feathers, and many other items depending on the theme of each piece. This one is only in a 5 x 7 frame, but she also made some huge works of art.

Felt Indian Outfit for School

Many moons ago, my Granddaughter needed to dress like a Native American Indian for school. Of course, we only found out the night before she needed to be a little Indian girl. Panic set in until I found this big piece of tan FELT fabric in the closet. Honestly, it was one of those things I had no clue what I was going to do with when I purchased it....BUT it was less than a dollar for over three yards!

I laid the folded fabric down and free handed the neck and arms. I cut it on the fold so I did not have to seam up the shoulders. Then I just cut the fabric straight down the sides. I only had to sew up each side seam. Then I cut fringe all along the bottom of the dress.

She didn't like the super loose fit, so I cut strips of the felt fabric and braided it into a belt.

I made her a head dress by cutting a wide strip of felt fabric and stapling feathers to the back of it. Before adding the staples I measured it to fit her head.

She wore a t-shirt under the dress because felt is rather warm. She also wore necklaces made out of colored corn, but I have long since lost track of those. She was extremely proud of her outfit.

Another time I made her a pilgrim outfit out of one of my husband's old white dress shirts. I used the collar to make the front part of the bonnet, the largest piece of the back to make the apron, and the yoke area to make the collar thing to go over her shoulders. She just wore a long black skirt and black shirt to complete the look. We loaned it to a girl the next year and it did not return.

Pie Tin Pumpkin

Cut the bottom out of a pie tin leaving a part of the edge of the pan for the stem.

Don't use your sewing scissors! I have a pair I use only for crafts...wire cutting etc.

Lay the cut out pumpkin on a towel and poke holes in the pumpkin with a nail.

I am pretty sure your hole pattern will be more creative and look better than mine.

I took green and orange Sharpies to kinda color the pumpkin.

Then I decided it needed a piece of green ribbon tied around the stem.

This project took about fifteen minutes.

It would be quick and easy if you need inexpensive decorations.
