I-40 Closed Route 66 Saves the Day

With approximately 20 miles of Interstate 40 closed due to a overturned semi tanker truck Historic Route 66 saved the day for lots of travelers. I had heard about both the east bound and west bound lanes of Interstate 40 being closed between Clinton and Weatherford and had already decided to take Historic Route 66. Before I could get to the place to exit the Interstate was already at a stand still with backed up traffic. The five miles to the turn off was stop and go and the go was only 10 mph. It was kind of neat to see all the semi-trucks and other vehicles traveling the Historic Highway.

I didn't think to get my camera out quick enough to get the full photo of the over turned tanker, but on the left of the above photo is the cab of the truck. I am on the south service road and the tanker in the middle of the photo is on Historic Route 66.

All of the emergency vehicles are on the east bound lanes of Interstate 40.

As I am about to get to re-enter Interstate 40 as far as I can see are backed up vehicles waiting to exit on to Historic Route 66 west bound. Remember I only have a easy share point and shoot and I am driving so the photos leave a lot to be desired.

After I exited off into Weatherford, I had to go to the other side of town to pick up some items at the store. Wow...there were still vehicles backed up on Interstate 40 again as far as I could see, but I did not take those photos. I only took me about 40 minutes longer to get home even with the detour. Everytime I get on a part of Historic Route 66 made out of real concrete with the curved up sides I think of childhood trips...

Queen Grace Cat

My daughter's cat Grace should have been named Queen Grace, because she certainly thinks she deserves the ROYAL treatment. Here are just a few Grace photos that make me laugh.

Recycled Auction Pots

My sister had gone to an auction and purchased a whole bunch of big flower pots. She did not want the extra pots that were grouped together with the ones that she was trying to get. She sent several of the pots home with me.

I spray painted the biggest one brown, because it was ugly. I would have painted the others, but I ran out of paint and time.Then I put a layer of pine cones in the bottoms of all the pots. I put the pine cones in the bottom so it would not take so much potting soil. I planted tomatoes and peppers in the pots and delivered them to my daughter's house in OKC.

These pots would have been very expensive to have purchased new. Remember to recycle pots when you make your container garden. Watch auctions and gargage sales for inexpensive pots and other garden accessories.

Signs of Summer Route 66

The Signs of Summer for me are when the motorcycle riders start taking rides on Historic Route 66. Route 66 runs the entire length of Weatherford, Oklahoma on Main Street. I saw this group as I was pulling on to Main Street, and then later they were all parked near the Mark Restaurant. There are so many things to see and places to stop on Route 66 that it is a great tourist attraction. Oklahoma has more miles of The "Mother Road" than any other state.

Cat Nap

We have a shelf over our toilet that holds our bath towels.

It is usually full of towels, but I was in the process of doing laundry.

I walked in and there was Callie Ann taking a cat nap on one of the shelves.

She was not amused that I woke her up from her nap.

Cats find the funniest places to take a nap!

Bacon and Tomato Sandwich

My husband is the BEST! The other day I was doing laundry and blogging. I started to smell bacon cooking. I went to change the clothes from the washer to the dryer and as I walked into the kitchen my husband said "aren't you going to take pictures?" He has gotten into such a habit of me photographing his cooking that he didn't want me to forget! He was making bacon and tomato sandwiches, which is one of our favorite comfort type meals. Yum!

Normally he cooks the bacon in the microwave, but this day it was in the skillet.

He thought it would photograph better in the skillet.

Store bought tomatoes...not so great...but they worked.

We put Miracle Whip, Tomatoes, Onions and Bacon on our sandwiches.

He cooked a couple pieces of bacon for the granddaughter who doesn't like crispy!

This was a REALLY GOOD sandwich or I was just really hungry!

The Guardian OK State Capitol

Most State Capitol buildings are beautiful art by themselves, and some State Capitols have huge collections of art on display. The Oklahoma State Capitol has a beautiful collection of all kinds of art. The State Capitol buildings are open to the public and the tour of the art is also free. It is a great place to go on a inexpensive mini-vacation learning trip for the family. Check out the State Capitol where you live.



The Guardian

Enoch Kelly Haney's colossal statue The Guardian stands prominently atop the Oklahoma State Capitol dome where it was lifted on June 7, 2002. The 17 feet tall statue holds a staff that reaches 22 feet into the sky. This monumental project was completed in ten months and demanded 4,000 pounds of bronze, which was cast in 50 sections. Haney's own family served as models for this historic piece. Haney's son William and Haney's grandson, Enoch, inspired the guardian's eyes and cheeks respectively. Inside the rotunda, visitors can view a nine-foot replica of The Guardian, which was donated by Nancy Payne Ellis and her children.

During the dedication, Senator Haney gave a voice to the guardian, revealing the representation of all Oklahomans through the statue. The Guardian embodies the diversity within the proud and strong population of Oklahoma while serving as a reminder of our tumultuous times. The sculpture signifies the thousand of Native Americans that were forced from their homes during the 1800s and the sons and daughters that survived the devastating Dust Bowl. The towering statue exemplifies the valor of Oklahomans and their ability to overcome the most horrific catastrophes such as the bombing at the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City. The Guardian is a reminder that just below him within the halls of our grand Capitol, the true guardians of Oklahoma, our legislators, are working everyday to improve this already magnificent state.

The Artist  Enoch Kelly Haney

Truly a modern-day renaissance man, Enoch Kelly Haney's talents span two separate spheres - namely politics and art. Born on November 12, 1940 to William Woodrow and Hattie Louise Haney, Enoch grew up in Seminole, Oklahoma. The son of a full blood Seminole and Creek Indian, Haney's own grandfather was chief of the Seminole Tribe in the 1940s.

Haney's interest in Indian people is evident in his art, as he puts a great amount of energy into the research and documentation of Native American culture and traditions. His work is exacting in its detail and representation of native peoples. Haney received his Associate of Arts degree from Bacone College, and his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Oklahoma City University.

In 1962 he was honored with the Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship at the University of Arizona. Haney was designated as the Master Artist of the Five Civilized Tribes in 1975; he also was awarded a Governor's Art Award, Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Indian Heritage Award. Along with his work as an artist, Haney has served terms in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, as well as the Senate.



Spider Alert

My friend sent me this e-mail after I was telling her that my son's girlfriend, Vanessa, had been admitted to the hospital for a spider bite. She said her whole arm was swollen and it blistered up all around the bite. We were all alarmed at how quickly the bite made her sick and then when they kept her at the hospital. I just wanted to share this information with everyone to watch out and be careful this year. All "varmits" are worse this year, because of our mild winter.

If you don't look at but one picture, be sure you take a look at the last one so that you will know what the spider looks like! It's springtime & cleanup is going on. Be careful where you put your hands. They like dark spaces & woodpiles. Also areas in closets, the attic, the garage and in the woods under logs etc.

The Brown Recluse Spider is the most dangerous spider that we have in the USA. A person can die from it's bite. We all should know what the spider looks like. Send this around to people you love, because it is almost summertime. People will be digging around, doing yard work, spring cleaning, and sometimes in their attics.

Please be careful. Spider bites are dangerous and can have permanent and highly negative consequences. They like the darkness and tend to live in storage sheds or attics or other areas that might not be frequented by people or light. If you have a need to be in your attic, go up there and turn on a light and leave it on for about 30 minutes before you go in to do your work!

X-Rays for Children?

The following news release from the FDA has been causing quite a stir in the media for the past few weeks. I am wondering why this topic hasn't been brought up before now? When I think of how many X-rays my children and grandchildren have had in the past, it makes me sick. So many times we just say OK when medical professionals tell us we need to have a X-ray. We need to start questioning WHY does my child, or yourself for that matter, need that X-ray or other medical tests. Sometimes I feel that the medical professionals schedule us for tests just because it makes money for their clinic or the hospital or themselves! Ask questions!

FDA proposal aims to help reduce unnecessary radiation exposure for children

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it is seeking public comment on a proposal encouraging manufacturers to consider the safety of children in the design of new X-ray imaging devices. In the draft guidance, FDA is recommending that manufacturers design new X-ray imaging devices with protocols and instructions that address use on pediatric patients.

It also proposes that manufacturers who do not adequately demonstrate that their new X-ray imaging devices are safe and effective in pediatric patients should include a label on their device that cautions against use in pediatric populations.

To help health care providers more safely use their current equipment on pediatric patients, the FDA is collaborating with the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging (ARSPI) and manufacturers, through the Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance (MITA), to develop pediatric imaging radiation safety training materials.

The FDA has also launched a pediatric X-ray imaging website that provides information on the benefits and risks of imaging using ionizing radiation, recommendations for parents and health care providers to help reduce unnecessary radiation exposure, and information for manufacturers of X-ray imaging devices.

The guidance, website, and ongoing collaborations with ARSPI and MITA are part of FDA’s Initiative to Reduce Unnecessary Radiation Exposure from Medical Imaging, launched in February 2010.

When used appropriately, X-ray imaging, such as a CT, fluoroscopy, and conventional X-ray, can provide valuable information to help with diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical intervention in adults and children. At the same time, these types of exams expose patients to ionizing radiation, which can be of particular concern in pediatric patients.

The cancer risk per unit dose of ionizing radiation is generally higher for younger patients than adults, and younger patients have a longer lifetime for the effects of radiation exposure to manifest. Also, the use of X-ray equipment settings designed for adults can result in a larger radiation dose than necessary to produce a useful image for a smaller pediatric patient.

“The risk from a medically necessary imaging exam is quite small when compared to the benefit of accurate diagnosis or intervention. There is no reason for patients who need these exams to avoid them,” said Jeffrey Shuren, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Parents should engage in a discussion with their child's physician about benefits and risks of X-ray, computed tomography (CT), and fluoroscopy exams.”

A workshop scheduled for July 16, 2012, will bring together industry, X-ray imaging equipment users (e.g., physicians, radiologic technologists, and physicists), and patient advocates to discuss FDA’s draft guidance.

I had to learn to text message in self defense...my Granddaughter does texting at the speed of lightening. She never answers her phone, so I had to learn to text to communicate with her. Sometimes it takes me a few minutes to read what she has texted to me, because she uses so much texting lingo. OMG (Oh My Goodness) it makes me crazy. Some days it makes me LMAO (Laugh My Ars Off) other days it DMC (Drives Me Crazy). Some days I totally text to her using texting lingo just to make her laugh. She says Granny you are TF (Too Funny). New Restaurant on Route 66

My husband took me on a lunch date at the new Mexican Cafe on Route 66.

People look at you funny when you pull out the camera to take photos of the food.

I love chips and salsa!

We both ordered beef soft tacos.

 I wanted rice and beans and he wanted Mexican corn and mashed potatoes.

I took the photo of my plate and handed the camera to him and he photographed his.

He is such a good sport when it comes to my blogging and photos! 

Their food is really good just look at the meat in those tacos.

I could eat Mexican food every day, but Chinese is really my favorite.
