Cathead Biscuits

My husband made these Cathead Biscuits.
I ask him why he called them Cathead Biscuits?
He said he really didn't know that is just what he grew up hearing them called.
He is just too funny!
I would have called them Drop Biscuits, because you drop on a sheet and bake.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Mix (cut in) 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) cold Real Butter
2 cups Self Rising Flour
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1/2 teaspoon Salt
Stir in 1 1/4 cups Buttermilk
Drop by the handful onto a greased cookie sheet my husband uses the spray.
Bake 15 minutes

These are really light and flaky. Yummy!

  1. I really need to try making biscuits someday. These look perfect! (But not like catheads at all--I wonder where that name came from!)

  2. I remember my mother making these with Bisquick. She just added water.
I am cooking up a batch now, but had to make a few adjustments.
I have no buttermilk or butter (only have margarine) so I used shortening instead and cut it real nice into the flour. I do have a big jar of butternut squash puree that my sister in law gave me, and it had spices and such in it, such as for pie, so I used that instead. It is a bit chunky, so I used a little bit of water to thin it out.
Slapped heaping globs of it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (tinfoil hates me and I am already challenged when it comes to baking!). I am getting eight biscuits with this recipe. It is still cooking as I type....so I will not hit the publish button til I have one slathered in margarine. I need to get some butter! I usually keep it on hand, but it has been a buttered toast kind of month.
And it is COLD outside (as you know), so I am having a nice hot cup of tea.
    Still baking...
Well, the taste is very nice. I think I used too much shortening. I guess I better stick with your exact recipe next time! hehehe
