Lightening Safety

Lightening, so beautiful, so dramatic and so deadly. Lightening is the #2 storm killer in the U.S. killing more people on the average than hurricanes and tornados. Only floods kill more people.
Lightening kills 90-100 people in the U.S. each year. Yet only about 10% of those struck by lightening are killed. Ninety %, or about 900-1,000 people, survive, but many of these suffer life-long severe injury and disability, primarily neurological.
Lightening also causes about $5 billion in economic loss each year.
Those statistics are alarming... Could we say electrifying? But like many safety hazards we face, increased alertness and a little preparation go a long way to preventing injury.
We won't go into basic education about what causes lightening, etc. But the picture on the right will take you to a website that contains such information. It is interesting.
But a few facts will help us understand the danger.

  • The most dangerous times for lightening injuries are before the rain hits and after the rain. This is because folks will be inside shelter while it is raining. However, lightening can strike out of the clear, blue sky. Scientists suggest that you seek shelter when you first hear thunder, and stay in the shelter for 30 minutes after it stops raining.
  • Scientists have discovered that although 80% of second lightening strikes are within 2-3 miles of the first strike in other states, they are as far as 6 miles in Oklahoma. Aren't we special?
  • When thunder and/or lightening are first noticed, you can use the Flash-to-Bang (FB) method to determine its' rough distance and speed. For each 5 seconds, lightening is 1 mile away.
  • Safe shelter is defined as a building or vehicle that is grounded. For buildings, the presence of electrical and plumbing systems provide the grounding. For vehicles, it is the metal shell.
Step #1: Be Aware! Awareness is half the battle.
If you are planning to be outdoors for an event, little league game, picnic, etc., check the weather reports and do a little pre-planning if the weather may be an issue.
Keep your eyes on the sky. Watch for a storm that is growing quickly, such as when a storm is becoming very dark at its base or is growing very tall. This is particularly important because that first flash of lightening is particularly dangerous simply because it is unexpected. And you know how quickly weather conditions can change in Oklahoma!
Step #2: Know your shelter! If you are going to be out-of-doors, be aware of your nearest, safe shelter.
Get to a building that has electrical wiring and plumbing. This does not include a baseball dugout, bleachers, rain shelter, or a picnic pavilion. A vehicle with a solid metal roof and metal sides is a reasonable second choice.
However, even in buildings and cars avoid touching metal or water.
Use the 30-30 rule:
When you see lightening, count the time until you hear thunder. If this time is 30 seconds or less, seek shelter. If you just hear thunder, go ahead and get to shelter just to be safe. Wait 30 minutes or more after you hear thunder before leaving shelter.
If you are caught outside, the general rule is to avoid projecting above the surrounding landscape. Get off the hilltop and seek out a dry ravine or valley.

  • Avoid water-related activities, including indoor pools.
  • Avoid tall isolated objects like trees, poles and light posts.
  • Avoid open fields.
  • Avoid golfing.
  • Avoid metal fences.
  • Avoid open vehicles like golf carts and lawnmowers even if they have roofs.
Step #3: Know What To Do!
If lightening is imminent, it will sometimes give a very few seconds of warning. Sometimes your hair will stand-up on end, or your skin will tingle, or light metal objects will vibrate, or you will hear a crackling or "kee-kee" sound.
If this happens and you're in a group, spread out so there are several body lengths between each person. If only one person is struck, the others will be able to give some critical first aid.
Use the Lightening Crouch Put your feet together, squat down, tuck in your head and cover your ears (minimizes hearing damage).
When the immediate threat of lightening has passed, continue heading to the safest spot possible.
Remember, this is a desperate last resort; you are much safer if you follow the previous steps and not get into this high-risk situation.
Step #4: Know Lightening First-Aid

MYTH:
Lightening victims are electrified. If you touch them, you'll be electrocuted.
TRUTH:
It is perfectly safe to touch a lightening victim to give them first aid.
Lightening First-Aid People struck by lightening receive a severe electrical shock and may be burned. They may even appear to be dead.
Call 911. Give them your location and the number of victims; get help on the way.
The American Red Cross says that if a victim is not breathing, you should immediately begin mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, once every 5 seconds to adults and once every 3 seconds to infants and small children.
If both pulse and breathing are absent, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be started. This procedure should be administered by persons with proper training.
Victims who appear only stunned or otherwise unhurt may also need attention
  • Check for burns, especially at fingers and toes, and next to buckles and jewelry.
  • Give first aid for shock.
  • Do not let the victim walk around if it can be avoided.
The first tenet of emergency care is "make no more casualties". If you are still exposed and in a active thunderstorm, consider moving the victim and yourself to a safer location.
Like tornados, hurricanes and other natural disasters, we can't control lightening.
We can only control our responses when they threaten. Lightening is no different.
  • Be Aware!
  • Know Where Safe Shelter Is.
  • Know the Warning Signs That Lightening is Imminent & the "Lightening Crouch".
  • Know How to Care for Victims.

Mosquito Trap

Mosquito trap - No more mosquitos!!

Cut the top off a 2 liter bottle. Invert the cone and place it inside the bottle. Glue the two pieces together. Add 1 tsp yeast and 1/2 cup sugar to some luke warm water, and pour the mixture into the bottle. Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide that you exhale. The yeast feeds off the sugar and emits the same gas, so the mosquito enters the bottle, thinking it will find food there.

Play-Doh - The Beginning

Play-Doh
Did you know, Play-Doh was originally used as a wallpaper cleaner. Further, the compound that eventually became Play-Doh debuted a full 22 years before Play-Doh hit the shelves. It also twice saved a failing company, Kutol, a Cincinnati based soap company. The woman who suggested the idea and name was given no credit in the patent nor any financial compensation. In addition to that, it took the help of one Captain Kangaroo to make it a national hit.
It all started with Kutol about to go under in the late 1920s. Cleo McVicker, just 21 years old, was tasked with selling off the company’s remaining assets, which at the time comprised mainly of powdered hand soap; once that was done, the company would be too. Cleo, however, managed to turn a nice profit in performing his task, the result of which was that the company managed to barely stay afloat. Cleo McVicker then hired his brother, Noah, and they set about trying to make the company viable again.
In 1933, Cleo was at a meeting with Kroger grocery stores when they asked if he made wallpaper cleaner. Wallpaper cleaner was a hot commodity as, at the time, coal was the leading way to heat one’s home, being much more efficient and cheaper than wood. This had the negative side effect of leaving soot everywhere, which was difficult to clean off of wallpaper as you couldn’t get it wet (this was before vinyl wallpaper).
In a bold stroke, Cleo told them they could make the wallpaper cleaner for them, even though no-one at Kutol knew how just then. Kroger subsequently ordered 15,000 cases of it from Kutol with a $5,000 penalty if Kutol didn’t deliver on time, which was more than Kutol had available to pay, if they failed. Luckily for the brothers, Noah McVicker was able to figure out how to make the commonly used wallpaper cleaner and the compound that ultimately would become Play-Doh was born.
Unfortunately for the brothers, though, while this provided the staple income for about a decade, after WWII, sales began to slowly dwindle thanks to the fact that coal heat was slowly being replaced by oil and gas furnaces. These furnaces obviously didn’t produce the soot problem, so cleaning wallpaper regularly wasn’t something that was needed. The sales further dissipated shortly thereafter when vinyl wallpaper became available. This type of wallpaper could be cleaned with nothing but soap and water, so the McVicker’s product was now virtually obsolete.
To make matters worse, Cleo McVicker died in a plane crash in 1949 and Joe McVicker, Noah McVicker’s nephew who was hired to replace Cleo, found out he had a rare form of cancer at the age of 25 and wasn’t expected to survive. *spoiler alert* He did, in fact, survive thanks to a new experimental radiation treatment. Although, even after treatment, the doctors deemed it unsuccessful and told him he would die shortly (in reality he didn’t die until 1992, though his ending was pretty sad all the same, see the Bonus
Factoids below for more).

In any event, enter Kay Zufall in 1954, the unsung hero of Play-Doh history and the sister-in-law to Joe McVicker. Kay was running a nursery school and needed cheap materials to have her kids make Christmas decorations. In the process of searching for said cheap decoration materials, she read in a magazine that you could use wallpaper cleaner for this task. Knowing the trouble her brother-in-law’s company was in, she went out and bought a bunch of Kutol’s wallpaper cleaner, to see if it would work for this application. After not only observing that it worked, but that the kids had a blast playing with the wallpaper cleaner, she called Joe and told him they needed to make their now obsolete wallpaper cleaner into a toy. Joe then took a look at the Christmas ornaments made by the kids and agreed it was a great idea. They simply removed the detergent from the dough and added an almond scent and some coloring, as it was originally white.
Joe decided to re-christen the compound which would now be a toy: “Kutol’s Rainbow Modeling Compound”. Enter Kay Zufall to once again save the day, assuring him that that was a horrible name for their product. Her and her husband, Bob, then set about trying to think up a better one. In the course of their discussions, Kay came up with “Play-Doh”, which they both loved and suggested the name to Joe, who also liked it.
Thanks to some connections to school board members formed from selling soap, they initially sold their new product to schools all throughout Cincinnati. They then began trying to market it to stores, with only a small amount of success locally.
While at this point it had saved the company, without money for major advertising, Play-Doh initially seemed to be destined for very slow growth. Joe McVicker though, one day managed to talk his way into an audience with Bob Keeshan, better known as Captain Kangaroo. He showed Keeshan the Play-Doh and explained to him that Kutol had no money for a national advertising campaign nor money to have the product put on the show. However, if Keeshan would agree to use the product once a week on Captain Kangaroo, they’d give the Captain Kangaroo production company 2% of the sales generated, so long as he continued to show it. The Captain agreed and Play-Doh quickly became a national hit, even appearing on other children’s shows thanks to the Captain Kangaroo exposure.
With the national exposure, Play-Doh quickly had about 116 months worth of orders to fill, even with the factory at their then max capacity. Further, even though they still sold the wallpaper compound for 34 cents for a can, they were able to get $1.50 per can on Play-Doh, for the same amount of compound, even though the two products were virtually identical, save the cleaning compound was white and had a small amount of detergent added.

Canola in Western Oklahoma

I almost waited too late to take photos of the beautiful yellow Canola fields around Western Oklahoma. I took these between Weatherford and Thomas. They were turning to seed and not nearly as brilliant as they were the week before. Canola is a crop with plants from three to five feet tall that produce pods from which seeds are harvested and crushed to create canola oil and meal. These plants also produce small, yellow flowers, which beautify the environment. Canola seeds contain about 44 percent oil. This large percentage of oil comes in a small package; canola seeds are similar in size to poppy seeds, though brownish-black in color. Although they look similar, canola and rapeseed plants and oils are very different. Canadian scientists used traditional plant breeding in the 1960s to eliminate the undesirable components of rapeseed* and created "canola," a contraction of "Canadian" and "ola." Canola oil is prized for its heart-healthy properties with the least saturated fat of all culinary oils.

Canola belongs to the same family as mustard, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Besides the U.S., it is grown in Canada and Australia, but canola oil is consumed all over the world. In the U.S., the ratio of supply versus demand of canola oil is about 1:3, which presents a huge opportunity for U.S. producers to grow more canola.
About 1.5 million acres are currently grown in the U.S., predominantly in North Dakota, but also in Oklahoma, Minnesota, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and several other states.

According to the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service winter canola is estimated that about 275,000 acres of winter canola were planted in the southern Great Plains. Farmers harvest the seed and then the canola crushers will crush that seed for its oil. Local markets have and are expected to continue to increase. The canola in Oklahoma  is primarily used for cooking oil.

This is a winter crop that grows the same time as winter wheat does. Why rotate? There are wheat fields that have “grassy weeds” in them and some of the weeds have started showing resistance to some herbicides. Those weeds could lead to dockage, a discount, for producers. Utilizing canola as a weed management tool has been one of the main reasons wheat producers have adopted the crop. Research has shown the most profitable crop rotation is wheat and canola. And a lot of it goes to the weather factors that we have faced here in the last three years. We have some moisture in the fall, winter and spring, but we haven't got it in the summer. So as a result, in crop rotation, the winter crops are currently leading the pack.

If you look in this photo you will also see another Oklahoma "crop" that is being planted all over our state. The Wind Turbine industry is growing in Oklahoma by leaps and bounds.

Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead

I saw this woman on television and I thought she was so interesting...wanted to share her information and organization with you.

Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead

In response to Sheryl’s 2010 TEDTalk on the ways women are held back—and the way we hold ourselves back—viewers around the world shared their own stories of struggle and success. This overwhelming response inspired Sheryl to write this book. In Lean In, she shares her personal stories, uses research to shine a light on gender differences, and offers practical advice to help women achieve their goals. The book challenges us to change the conversation from what women can’t do to what we can do, and serves as a rallying cry for us to work together to create a more equal world.

Lean In supports women in 3 important ways:

  1. Community

We want all women to have the confidence and know-how to achieve their goals. This starts with an active and supportive community. Each day we’ll encourage an open exchange of ideas and information. We will also share Lean In Stories—short narratives of moments in life when we choose to “lean in” or “lean back” intended to inspire, teach and connect us.
  2. Education

We offer a growing library of free online lectures on topics including leadership and communication. Produced in partnership with the Clayman Institute for Gender Studies at Stanford University and other well-known experts, these lectures offer women practical skills they can apply in their daily lives.
  3. Circles

Lean In Circles are small groups that meet monthly to encourage and support each other in an atmosphere of confidentiality and trust. We provide the materials and support to run a successful Circle, including online spaces that make it easy for members to stay up-to-date and connected. Circles are powered by Mightybell, the first network of private groups.

Cracker Barrel Chicken n' Dumplins

From Facebook....YUM!

Cracker Barrel Chicken n' Dumplins

Ingredients
2 cups Flour
½ teaspoons Baking Powder
...
1 pinch Salt
2 Tablespoons Butter
1 cup butterMilk, A Bit Less Than A Full Cup (you can use regular milk if needed)
2 quarts Chicken Broth
3 cups Cooked Chicken

Recipe Description
A bowl of chicken and dumplings. A glass of sweet tea. It’s a meal any Kentuckian would be proud to fix and danged happy to sit down to. And it’s not hard to make. Come on, I’ll show you how.

Preparation Instructions
In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Cut the butter into the dry ingredients with a fork or pastry blender. Stir in the milk, mixing with a fork until the dough forms a ball.

Heavily flour a work surface. You’ll need a rolling pin and something to cut the dumplings with. I like to use a pizza cutter. I also like to use a small spatula to lift the dumplings off the cutting surface.

Roll the dough out thin with a heavily floured rolling pin. Dip your cutter in flour and cut the dumplings in squares about 2″x2″. It’s okay for them not to be exact. Just eye ball it. Some will be bigger, some smaller, some shaped funny.

Use the floured spatula to put them on a heavily floured plate. Just keep flouring between the layers of dumplings.

To cook them, bring the broth to a boil. Drop the dumplings in one at a time, stirring while you add them. The extra flour on them will help thicken the broth. Cook them for about 15-20 minutes or until they not doughy tasting. Add the cooked chicken to the pot and you’re done!

Shawnee, OK - Art Horses

For the past few years, as we stopped in Shawnee, Oklahoma I noticed the beautiful painted horses at various places. This time as we stopped to grab a burger I took photos of this awesome horse. I love the idea and it is much like the painted buffalos all across our state. The Horse project was sponsored by businesses and individuals of Shawnee.

Horse In The City is an exciting way to take art out of the museums and onto the streets for people of all ages to enjoy. This city art project has helped to build civic pride, and benefit local charities. Life-size fiberglass horses continue to make an impression that is hard to miss around Shawnee as some of the area’s most talented artists “bring to life” these graceful creatures.

Strawberry Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips

Fruit Salsa and Baked Cinnamon Chips

 For the fruit salsa:
...

2 kiwis, peeled and diced
2 Golden Delicious apples – peeled, cored and diced
8 oz raspberries
1 (16 oz) carton of strawberries, diced
2 tbsp white sugar
1 tbsp brown sugar 3 tbsp fruit preserves, any flavor (I used strawberry; would only use 2 tbsp next time)

For the cinnamon chips:
10 (10 inch) flour tortillas melted butter or butter flavored cooking spray

For the cinnamon sugar:
1 cup white sugar 2 tbsp cinnamon

Instructions:

1. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix kiwis, apples, raspberries, strawberries, white sugar, brown sugar, and fruit preserves. Cover and chill in the refrigerator at least 15 minutes while the oven preheats to 350 degrees.

2. Coat one side of each flour tortilla with melted butter or butter flavored cooking spray. Sprinkle tortillas with desired amount of cinnamon sugar, cut into wedges, and arrange in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Spray again with cooking spray (not necessary if using melted butter).

3. Bake in the preheated oven 8 to 10 minutes. Repeat with any remaining tortilla wedges. Allow to cool approximately 15 minutes. Serve with chilled fruit mixture. This salsa can also be served with cinnamon graham crackers or cinnamon pita chips. Best when made and eaten the same day otherwise the fruit gives off so too much juice and it gets runny.

Cream of Tartar - Cheap Cleaner

In my house, items like cream of tartar (potassium bitartrate) are not simply a way to stabilize egg ...whites but also very inexpensive cleaning secrets.

This long-forgotten gem of a cleaning agent may be used with a little water or vinegar to lift even the most stubborn stains. Unattractive grout driving you batty? Mold and mildew stains got you reaching for the Prozac? Burner pans and casserole dishes giving you fits? Cream of Tartar is your new best friend.

Cream of tartar is one of nature’s best bleaching agents. Cream of tartar, a.k.a “crusted wine,” is mixed with baking soda to create baking powder (bet you didn't know that.. okay, some of you probably did). While it is an acid, it’s not harmful. It’s an acidic salt which comes from grapes.

Use a few tablespoons of cream of tartar with hot water or hydrogen peroxide and clean any aluminum pans which have discoloration or any rusty drains, pans, or stains.

Do you have copper kettles? Mix some cream of tarter with lemon juice and rub the copper with it. Rinse and be amazed!

How about a porcelain sink, tub, commode? Rub the porcelain surfaces with cream of tartar and watch the stains disappear.

Fabric stains? No problem. Mix a few teaspoons of cream of tartar with some glycerin and use like spray-and-wash. The results? Cures ring around the collar!

Just need a great nonabrasive cleaner? Mix 2 teaspoons of vinegar and 2 teaspoon of cream of tartar in a small dish (use 3 or 4 teaspoons of vinegar and 3 or 4 teaspoons of cream of tartar if you have more items to clean). Apply with your cleaning rag or scrub brush and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Scrub. Wash with hot soapy water.
